Mr. Hornak came into his own as an artist in New York when abstract painting seemed to have run its course and many young artists were investigating new possibilities for representational painting. The paintings surpass photographic realism. They are romantic to the point of becoming mystical. John Canaday, Chief Art Editor of the New York Times, noted in reviewing Hornak’s last solo exhibition in 2002 that “Ian Hornak is right at the top of the list of romantic descriptive painters today.”

Ian Hornak’s work is represented in many museums, public and corporate collections including: Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA; Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; AT&T, Inc. World Headquarters, Dallas, TX; Chase Manhattan Bank World Headquarters, New York, NY; Chicago Title Land Trust World Headquarters, Chicago, IL and Xerox Corporation, World Headquarters, Stamford, CT. With in excess of 30 solo exhibitions to his credit, Hornak’s first one-man show was held at the venerable, New York 57th Street, Tibor de Nagy Gallery in 1971. His last solo was held at the Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery located on 57th street in New York, 2002.
